Rosy finches for Christmas

I got on the first train on Christmas day with a special unlimited ride ticket. Train is, of course, running as usual on the 25th of December in Japan.  We headed to mountain area hoping for a white Christmas!

It's been mild this year and snow was just about to cover the surface of the ground but nonetheless we had a white Christmas!

Rosy finches, my first encounter in Japan!   Tinge of pink and orange is appealing in snow-white.

Buzzard was gazing at ground perching or hovering.  Snow on the ground shines the white belly of the bird.

Christmas. It's time you think of Cormorants. CCC, Christmas Cormorant Count, was held again this year at Gyotoku Bird Observatory.

This precious bird observatory is now facing a big problem.  Because the building is old and does not have necessary earthquake resistance, Chiba prefecture decided to close it and currently there is no  plan for reopening.
It would be wonderful if we could used this opportunity and build nice observatory with cafe facility like those in Britain instead!  But we need to work a lot for whatever to happen.

Black-headed Gulls drawn from the observatory.

Trying to catch the head scratching movement!

I got nano block Toucan from secret Santa during the Christmas party!

Happy Christmas!

I love this time of the year.  It makes me want to do something special...... even though I am somehow always so busy.
Merry Christmas to everyone!

Cooking roast chicken at a beach in a dutch oven on open fire is becoming our annual event.
Broccolis and bell peppers made Christmas colour.
Colouring the drawing, I realised the sketchbook still smells the smoke.

Japanese Tits and Varied Tits were eating Chinese tallow's seeds at nearby park.

In Search of Birds of Prey

A peregrine was plucking a coot.  When Slaty-backed Gull came and circled above him, he was annoyed and decided that he had enough for a meal.  He flew away.

We also saw Merlins!  When I see a Merlin, I can not help but imagining a charming wizard, living backwards in time, from The Once and Future King!

We watched harriers roosting from the car.  Flat landscape and the red round sun reminded me of East Anglia.  I wished there was a hide and we were watching from it, like the one in Woodwalten Fen, perhaps.  It's so much nicer somehow.  Especially after everything finishes, having to walk back to the car through the marsh or along the bank in darkness makes the experience somewhat more special.

Arty Days

We sometimes need to feed ourselves in order to create something. I recently visited two museums, Yabuuchi Masayuki Art Museum in Yamanashi to see the original illustrations for Gamba series, children's stories about adventures of rats and otters, and Yokosuka Museum of Art in Kanagawa to see Ukiyoe prints.

Stunning male red-flanked bluetail we watched in Yamanashi.
Masayuki Yabuuchi, who did the original book illustration for Gamba series, was a wildlife artist.  So even though the stories are fiction and rats are riding shearwaters and having a party, they really look like real animals, drawn anatomically correct, which reminded me of C. F.Tunnicliffe's Tarka the Otter.

At Yokosuka Museum of Art, I joined a workshop on Ukiyoe print! A printmaker from the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints came to show us how they print the famous Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa.  It has eight layers.

And we could also try printing the first layer called Omohan, which is the outline. Above image is the one I printed using the block remade by the carver from the institute for educational purpose.  The key is to move the baren horizontally.
Inks for Ukiyoe print are special and more liquid than those for normal block print. They go into the fibers rather than sit on the surface of paper.

Near the museum, we encountered this special nature spectacular, wintering Powdered oakblues gathering on a leaf!

Snow Monkeys

I went to draw snow monkeys at Jigokudani in Nagano!

It was actually my first time visiting there.  I did not pay much attention to this monkey in hot spring before I lived in the UK and leaned that it is one of the iconic image of nature in Japan.

I planned to go in November so that it's cold enough but not too much for drawing and especially that I could make next year's new year's card in time.  Next one is the year of monkey.   I thought the monkey should come every day with no problem.  They are fed there.
But looking at the park's news in mid-November, I realised that monkeys had not been there for more than two weeks.  They are wild ones and they have a choice of not coming down. That is good in a way.

I leaned that during the mating season, they are not stable and tend to roam about as well as fight with each other. Luckily they decided to come down to the park on the days I visited.

Many of them were drinking hot water at the bath.

Yoga in the hot spring.

And meditates afterward.

School Visit

My first experience of a school visit at an elementary school in Oiso.  Children were all so excited and I was asked massive number of questions about the grey heron.  "How big is a heron's chick?"  "What' is the role of a heron?"  "Can they fish at night?"

Sketching rabbits and ducks and buildings with children.
"Have a look, duck has webs on its feet.  So you should draw it."

Earlier this month, I helped a family birdwatching event at a city park in Kawasaki.

After the event, I watched them playing.

This little rascal had his time making a fountain and getting wet and all the other kids joined him, too.  Looked so fun!  I wish to go back to the days when I was just happy to get wet and didn't bother anything like "I can not get wet now because I have to go back by train."

Winter migrants

I had a walk in a woodland and was greeted by several winter birds, black-faced buntings, hawfinches and a dusky thrush!

This was my first hawfinch of the season.

This already-very-tame black-faced bunting was feeding on a path literary in front of me.  They normally start doing it more often in the end of winter but it's still November and they have just arrived in the area!  I wish I had completed the drawing but someone had to go pass and it decided to fly away.

Common Stinkhorn
