I made watercolour illustrations on birds at night for the Wild Bird Society of Japan's news letter, May issue 2016.  It was a good practice to draw all the birds in one peace with the background.

Want some biscuits?

Last weekend I visited a place where we can see the Japanese Luehdorfia, the spring goddess.  The butterfly only comes out for a short period in spring to mate and lay eggs under leaves of special plants like Asarum nipponicum

So as we climbed the mountain, we gently flipped each leaf to look for their eggs.
And yes, we found many!  The eggs were just like sparkling sprinkles on sweets.

Here are my imaginary biscuits!

(Japanese Luehdorfia)

Sketches I made during the field sketching event on the 10th April at Yatsuhigata mudflat.

Black-winged Stilt was the star of the today.

While waiting for the tide to go out, I drew a couple of wigeon.  I realised that the female's back looked quite white because each feather has white edge, making beautiful scaly pattern.

Lesser Sand Plovers.

Walking in the wood the other day, I came across a community of the wind flower (Anemone flaccida). "It will make a nice pattern," I said, looking at them from directly above. And I suddenly realised that I thought the same thing two years ago at the same place.

So I felt that I must make the pattern this year!

SAKURA

Cherry petals are everywhere.  The magical week of pink blossom seems to be over now.
Since I missed the season by being in Europe last year, I enjoyed all the aspects of it.

I like the cherry blossom in the city but I love them more in the mountain.  Only during this season, you can spot cherry trees from a distance.   Every tree species has its own special colour in the spring pastel carpet:  pale pink of Hill Cherry, white of Oshima Cherry, chartreuse green of Sawtooth Oak and lime green of another kind of oak.

The Marriage of Eels

I was asked to paint the eels' wedding in the middle of a message board.  I tried to imagine it.  The site must be at the Mariana Trench.   Who could be the guests?

Albatross Festival

The best thing about going back by ferry is that the journey itself can also be the birding highlight.

"And a good south wind sprung up behind;
The Albatross did follow,
And every day, for food or play,
Came to the mariner's hollo!"
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

At one point, off the Toshima island, we even had five Short-tailed Albatrosses in a sight; one adult, two immatures and two juveniles. I did not know which one to look!  It was my first time to watch the Short-tailed albatross.  So as you could imagine, I was extremely happy!
I was told that the chance of seeing the Short-tailed has been increasing in the last few years probably due to the success of the conservation projects in Torishima and Ogasawara.

We saw at least twelve Short-tailed and four Black-footed Albatrosses during the journey.

We woke up very early and went out in the forest at around 5:00 for the island's famous dawn chorus. We heard this year's first Ijima's leaf-warbler on the 30th March!

When we started, it was too dark to sketch anything.  But gradually shapes became recognisable and colours visible and it turned out to be the best time to watch the Japanese Robins (E.a. tanensis).

Many trees died from the volcanic gass after the eruption in 2000. But plant succession is evidently progressing. Field of yellow grass stretches almost to the top of the mountain and pioneer trees add bright fresh green colour to the scenery.

Pelagic Cormorants

Birds on Miyake Island

The first morning after breakfast, we went to Izu misaki. There I saw the most peculiar sight, a female pheasant at the edge of rocky shore! In Miyake, pheasants are brought in from the mainland for hunting purpose. It's interesting that there are only records of releasing Red-necked Pheasants but the pheasants that can be seen currently on the islands are Japanese pheasants.

Izu Thrush, the island's special bird.

Two Japanese Wood Pigeons were feeding on the ground.

Winter Wren (T.t.mosukei)

The Varied Tit (P.v.owstoni )was digging out an acorn under a big oak tree, probably the one he hid last autumn.

Osprey

Piper kadsura

I visited Miyake Island, one of Izu islands, located 175 km southeast of Tokyo, to see my friend. It is a volcanic island erupted as recent as the year 2000. You can study many geological features like a whole area covered by ʻAʻā lavas, lava tree mold, scoria cone and caldera. It is also a bird island having several of our endemic species that can not be seen on the mainland Japan.

My friend took me to a secret view point of Tairoike, the crater lake on the south of the island.

The Izu islands often have different variant species from our usual ones on mainland. Normally, they are the variations adapted to the life on the coast and have glossy, thick leaves.  But it's very difficult to tell!

Japanese Weasel is an introduced animal on Miyake island.  Around 30 weasel were released during the 70s and 80s in order to get rid of rats. Now the number seems to be increasing to hundreds. Some precious native species like Izu Thrush and Okada's five-lined skink have been suffering from the predation.

Happy International Children's Book Day!

A few weeks ago, my mother made me a nice book shelf out of seven pieces of boards. It is 60cm-high and looks just like those in children's library!

(Mine contains all my wildlife art books and bird guidebooks as well as picture books, though)
