I visited my uncle's friend for Christmas and joined her family's Christmas lunch in Oxford. Snow still remained a lot there, so it was white Christmas!

Christmas pudding

Thank you very much for nice Christmas!

Moorhen animation

One of the visitors of this blog made this animation out of my previous post! It's fun.

Merry Christmas

This year I may have a white Christmas for the first time in my life.
Snow from a few days ago still remains in Cambridge.

A story of Moorhens

Since our studio closes from Christmas to the day before our hand in day, I started working hard on my sequential images instead of writing essays so that I can scan and print A3-size images by the deadline...even though my mother is visiting me...

17 December 2010

writing essays

When you write something in English, you should try to think in English from the beginning instead of making sentences in Japanese and translating them into English. This is what I've been told.
It is possible when I know exactly what I want to say.

But to start writing essays, which I haven't decided what to write, I found it too difficult.

I always feel that when I'm writing texts, my brain is thinking about what to say faster than my hand can write it down or type it in as actual sentences...even in Japanese. The problem is that my brain can only keep the idea just for a few seconds. In fact this is the reason why I always write and type so fast in such a messy way.
So it becomes harder when I have to catch the instant and temporary idea in my brain with my poor English. I wonder how people are tackling with this.

It started snowing again in Cambridge!

Tomorrow is the last day of this semester. I can't believe that I've already been here for more than three months. And one year has passed since I decided to come here.

My Moorhens

Since I sketched so many moorhens for my first project, I decided to make a sequential image of them for the second module.

Although I became good at catching their shapes and movements from observation, it is still difficult to draw the poses that I want them to do in the story. Making a series of images is something completely different from painting one nice picture.

It's snowing!

It started snowing this morning and in a few minutes, everything became white.

Wood Pigeons feeding seeds of ivy. It's going to be a tough winter for wildlife and also for me.

For Christmas gift...I designed a new book cover for paperbacks.

Last Saturday, I joined the RSPB Cabmridge group's field trip and went to Norfolk! It was amazing to see how flat East Anglia actually is. And fog makes it look even fantastic.

Brent Geese and Eurasian Oystercatchers(コクガンとミヤコドリ)
This foggy scenery was my first sight of the British sea. Watching the shore line carefully by telescope, we found some waders such as Redshanks, Curlews, Grey Plovers and Sanderlings.

London sightseeing

London Eye and Big Ben
I need a bigger sketchbook!
Since the entrance fees are expensive everywhere, I decided just to enjoy them from the outside and wait until when some of my friends or my mother or relatives visit me...

Time for brownie!

My uncles friend recommended me to visit the Borough Market on Saturday. And it was a great place! I just sketched a lot.

Some sellers were very kind...like the person in this brownie stall. He not only allowed me to stay at the back but also gave me a piece of brownie!

But sometime I was asked to pay 5 pounds to draw(she was joking, thought).

Going To London

Last weekend, I went to London for the first time in my life to visit my uncle's friend. Living in Cambridge for two months, somehow, I hadn't been there, which is just an hour away by train.
When I was living in cities around Tokyo, it was nothing special to travel daily for one or two hours by train. But since the cities here are surrounded by countryside and not sprawling, going to another city sounds like a big journey. Although there must be a lot of commuter traveling from Cambridge to London everyday, it is not as common as commuting from Yokohama to Tokyo.

Cambridge Station in the morning.

Guy Fawkes Night

It was drizzling on the Guy Fawkes Night and the ground was muddy. Even though, there were a lot of people waiting for the fireworks. And thanks to my friends who were holding umbrella for me, I could sketch the wonderful night!

The firework which looked like balloons flying away was really cute.

I felt the warmth of the fire.

We bought some toffees and licorice candies. I couldn't help buying something from those stalls during a festival.

I wonder why almost all the Japanese do not like licorice candy. And it is so hard to find one in Japan.

Party night

My housemate took me to the Mexican party held at a night club. Since I can't dance, I can't drink...

I was having fun drawing people dancing and drinking until two o'clock in the morning. Thanks for giving me this rare opportunity!

My time

The summer time ended on Oct 30th. It was my first experience to turn back the clock without flying on the plane! 7 o'clock in the morning suddenly became light and the evening dark in one day.

Pumpkin guys

A guy was curving a pumpkin by the river.

The day just before it became a pumpkin guy.
I think I put too much detail on the Ruskin building but I had to! because I really like the time when the sun goes down and our houses cast a big shadow on the wall.

We curved pumpkins and roasted the seeds! I'm so happy to have friends who like to do what I exactly love to.

People

"You're drawing us, don't you?"
Finishing their chat, the lady came to check what I was doing.
Of course I was drawing you! because you both looked perfect with red clothes.

On Tuesday morning around ten o'clock, I sat in the garden of a church to draw the front door of a book shop...and I found Wood Pigeons sleeping on the branch. So I just gave up drawing the scenery and began to draw them peeping through the Ivy.

They woke up at 10:30, started to preen their plumage.

Isn't it too late for birds to get up? The early bird will catch the worm but since pigeons do not eat worms, they may not care about that...

Another Sunday has passed. A week seems to fly faster and faster these days. That meas I've got used to the life here. But I have to keep it in my mind that I can stay here for only one year and a half and have already spent a month!

Last Sunday morning.

The pub along the river; Normally there are only Moorhens there but it was packed with people last Sunday.

Today I walked along the river to Grantchester again with my sketch books!

Blackbird(juv.) and Pyracantha

Dogwood

Everybody loves the fruits of Dogwood.

I noticed this Grey squirrel eating the Dogwood fruits and maybe also the seeds by the kri kri sound. It was sitting on the branch and eating the fruits holding a whole infructescence. When it finished one infructescence, it just got another one from nearby and came back to the same branch, started eating again.
Since the inflorescence and also the branches near the fruits are too thin to perch for birds let alone the squirrel, everybody was trying hard to reach the berries.
I saw a Song Thrush hovered and picked them, which really reminded me of my graduation thesis!

Berries for me

Every time I walk around the town, I come across somebody sketching
...friends from my course!

This morning, I finally decided to buy a pack of raspberry, which I had wanted to get but had no chance. And of course I met a friend drawing the market square.

I took a train for the first time in England! and went to Newmarket with my friends

to sketch the horses. They kept moving and moving so I made so many unfinished croquis drawings.

Muntjac

Muntjac at Paradise Nature Reserve

One month has passed since I came here! And I really enjoy every single day.
